Book: The Kingdom of God: Our life with Jesus the King

Author: John Avery

Genre: Christian Devotional, non-fiction

Release date: March 1, 2023

What is the kingdom of God? Many people only vaguely understand (or misunderstand) it. Is it a future heavenly existence where the nicest dreams come true and nightmares are miraculously purged? After all, it is sometimes called the kingdom of heaven. Perhaps we dismiss it as an irrelevant ideal. Pastors typically prioritize topics like salvation, grace, eternal life, faith, and prayer. Yet, the kingdom was central to the messages of John the Baptist, Jesus, Paul, and other New Testament writers. Their words and behavior show that the kingdom theme is the framework uniting those topics and the entire mission of Jesus and His followers.

God’s kingdom centers on the King. It’s a life journey shared with other kingdom subjects.

This collection of 38 short pieces (2-3 pages each) explores vital questions like:

  • How well do we understand Jesus’ view of the kingdom of God?
  • What did Jesus mean when He spoke of being in (or outside of) the kingdom?
  • Does the kingdom make any difference to our lives right now? Should it?
  • Will the kingdom grow automatically, or do we have a part to play?

These pieces can be read quickly; they’re relaxed too—but think carefully and deeply.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

In a way, it just happened. I preached a series about the names of God. As I researched it, I realized that the existing books selected just a few names and dealt with them in a fairly academic way. Very few teachers seemed to answer the questions about why God revealed so many names and how knowing Him by those names helps us. The big theme through the names in the Bible is that He reveals Himself so that we can have relationship with Him and our faith increases as we know Him. So, I gradually developed my material and it became a book, and I became a writer.

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

Probably CS Lewis.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Almost every piece in my devotional works begins in my own times with Him and reading the Bible. I might check what I sense against commentaries or reference works sometimes, but the main message comes from those times with Him. Because they are short, they require little plotting. My first book, The Name Quest: explore the names of God to grow in faith and get to know Him better, required a lot of careful plotting and considerable rearranging after that. But it is 300 pages and covers a lot more ground.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

I write in my office/library. It is quiet and I can focus. Often, I develop ideas as I walk or work.

What are your hobbies?

I am a hiker. I love to be out in the mountains or desert. Summer hiking, winter cross-country skiing. The further into wilderness, the better.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write, write, write. Don’t try to perfect it until later. Join a critique group of people who can give honest and helpful feedback and encouragement.

Book: Where You Are & How to Get There

Author: Nolan Ryan Recker

Genre: Lifestyle

Release date: August 4, 2022

Have you ever had the thought or asked yourself the question, “How did I get here?”

You know, the kind of question examining the indirect decisions and circumstances that led you to the point life that you even need to ask such a question.

One of the oldest questions ever recorded in human history speaks to this very question we ask ourselves in moments of doubt. What if that ancient question was a question we ought to ask ourselves on a regular basis?

Journey with me as we wrestle with a question that if meant for us, today, would change everything about we view the life we choose to live.

About the Author

5Yhlw_MA

Nolan’s toughest and rewarding opportunities are being a husband and a father. As a husband and a father, Nolan wants his family members to discover and live a flourishing life. Nolan’s life experience has covered the spectrum from being a camp counselor to a school teacher to a custodian to a Lead Pastor of a church. This, is why he writes. If he wrestles with the ideas he writes about, maybe others wrestle with the same things, and if they do, would they benefit from a different perspective? He’s honored to listen to anyone who graces him with their time to tell their story; especially if it involves coffee or pizza.

More from Nolan

Hi there! The name’s Nolan & I love this book.

Seriously, it was a labor of love.

Sometimes writing for the sake of the enjoyment and scrutiny of others can lead to some pretty sad writing days. One of my favorite writers recently said something along these lines, “Sometimes, writing is opening up a blank word processor, staring at it for eight hours, closing the processor, and not writing a thing. It still counts!”

For me, I used to seek perfection in much of what I attempted to do. I wouldn’t try something if the odds weren’t favorable. It wasn’t until I learned that life is a lot like staring at a blank word processor. Even though I didn’t accomplish anything on a specific day or season of life, the fact that I showed up is what counts.

Learning to live life in this way. Discovering rhythms of creating, rest, consuming, pain, work, play, purpose, and my people; helped me to rediscover a life-story worth living.

A life-story worth writing.

I am so many things and wear so many different “hats,” but first and foremost, I am a loved human being, created in the Image of a loving and creative God.

I enjoy being a husband and a father.

I love the passion of writing.

When something comes together, there is no greater treasure than to put something into the world that brightens someone else’s experience of this life.

Wearing the “hats” of Pastor, Teacher, Coach, Friend, Advocate, etc. time and I again I would have conversations with people regarding the very things you will read in “Where You Are & How To Get There.”

We are all on this life journey together, and I am glad to journey on with all of you.

Author Interview

Which author has most influenced your own writing?

Not just one, but two authors equally. Rob Bell and Donald Miller.
Donald for his vulnerability and wrestling. Rob for his thoughtful questions and prose.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

When I write, I have a conversation with the reader—in my mind. Instead of relaying
information, ideas, or questions, I write as if I may know the reader’s response and then
speak to that thought as I write.

Describe your book in five words.

Punchy. Intuitive. Refreshing. Inspiring. Hopeful.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Audiobooks, especially when read by the author. I will get an audiobook recorded for
this book. I am excited about it!

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

The first-draft is literally a first-draft. Get over yourself and put it out there. The longer
you take on the first-draft, the harder the process. I tried to buck this advice and it only
led to frustration. Once I leaned into just getting it out there, it all started to flow, I got out
of my own way and this most recent project went a lot smoother.

More from Chuck

Sometimes life hits you unexpected, and when it doesn’t let up, you might feel a bit bewildered. That was me, when time after time I kept getting up, only to get knocked right back down again. I couldn’t understand why bad things kept happening to me, a good person, a good man. I was doing things the right way, so I thought. I married a God-fearing woman. I was using my life for God’s purpose. I had devoted my life to teaching the next generation as a youth pastor. Everything should have been smooth and easy, right? Amid a dark storm, nothing seemed easy. Why hardship hit so relentlessly was a mystery to me. Things didn’t seem fair. And when nothing made sense, I was reeling, searching, and found myself on the backside of the wilderness screaming to a God who only seemed to have a deaf ear turned my way. Sound familiar? In this book, I take you on a great journey to find answers when most answers seemed bleak, if not non-existent. Take God’s hand with me, he’s there, I promise. I’ll show you how his voice is so clear and distinct, even when we have trouble seeing which way is up. All That the Locusts Have Eaten is a testament to how God can bring us through, and that, in unexpected ways.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

Well . . . I wish I could tell you that I’ve always been an inspiring writer, but unfortunately, sometimes in life we need a bit of prodding.  My writing journey began through injury.  In 2018 I was in a severe accident in which I was confined to a chair nearly 24/7 with a traumatic brain injury.  Being a very active individual prior to my accident, it was hard to handle the instant change to sitting still all the time.  No more were the days of kayaking, bicycling on rails to trails, and adventuring through unknown territories.  I had to sit in silence all day due to the inability to handle stimuli.  I couldn’t handle visitors and became very lonely.  To make a long story short, the change was severely hard to handle, taking a giant toll on me emotionally and psychologically.  After about six months out my double vision stopped and my eyes adjusted enough that I started reading a little again.  It was a big relief because it was something I could do and enjoy.  I read a book by Joni Eareckson Tada, who also suffered an accident that left her disabled, and it started a new journey for me.  I soaked up the words she spoke of.  I saw how God could still use her, and it dawned on me: if God could still use her, then God could still use me!  I was still confined to a chair almost all day, but what better time to do something with myself than the present.  My mind began to think . . . what can I still do?  And so began my writing journey.  It was slow at first.  I had to learn to type again.  But I had a lot of time.  And the journey was exciting.  Over three years later, I’m writing books, doing a blog, and making every chance count to inspire people.  That’s what God does best.  He takes impossible situations and creates beauty out of things nobody thought possible.  I’m just one living example of how true Romans 8:28 is.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

I already mentioned how and why I started writing, but I never would have gotten into that mindset if it wouldn’t have been for my wife.  Her eyes saw possibilities when all I saw was hopelessness.  When I was sitting on a couch in despair, she could see a dream budding in my heart.  “You’ve always wanted to write a book,” she would say.  “What better time to write it than now?”  And she was right.  There was no better time.  Not only was it healthy for me to have a goal and a positive direction to point myself towards, but she could see beyond the now, and knew that there was something bigger in everything than just what I initially saw in an accident.  Not only did God use her to accompany what he was doing with Joni Eareckson Tada’s message, my wife’s voice would be the support to get me off the ground and into the writing world.  I will forever be grateful for what she did.  A whole ton of hurting people are being blessed with books and words because of her persistence.  Thanks, Faerie.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely a plotter.  I’m not sure how other author’s keep things straight when they are constructing their books in their heads, but with a disability involved, I am extra sensitive to my need for planning.  It’s actually quite funny.  I laugh at it when I do author talks at book signings.  I am in a very distinguished group of people that get to enjoy his own book again over and over.  “Sometimes I forget what’s in there,” I tell them.  “And I’m like, woah!  That’s good stuff!”  It’s fun to have the ability to read a book over again and enjoy it multiple times.  It is also frustrating for someone who tends to have trouble keeping all their notes together, so I’ve come up with a great system of book plotting to chart things out.  It works great, and I use it all the time now.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

Definitely outside.  It’s sort of funny, maybe, especially if you drive past me and wonder what I’m doing.  When I was able to start driving again, I instantly took advantage of it.  I spend a lot of time parked in my truck soaking up nature.  It’s my source of refreshment and replenishment I guess, as God’s creation tends to restore my creative spark.  You’ll find me parked in my pickup on a hilltop, beside a creek or river, in a field, or lost in a forest.  Sometimes I drive to a state park and work on a picnic table.  Sometimes I take a chair and enjoy the sunshine.  I let the beauty of what God has made to inspire me for what I write, as a well to draw from when I need to be in touch with the creative side of myself.  Yes, I have a desk at home . . . but I’ll take my coffee to go, please.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Who doesn’t resonate with David, taken from the sheepfold but moved to places he never thought possible?  A humble boy who had the ear of God in the lonely hills of Judah, a song, a pen, he spoke his heart with melody and prose.  And one day, that faithful boy was called on.  A giant was faced, a soul was faithful with what he had been trained and with.  And with all quality facetime that David had spent with his Creator, Goliath wasn’t as big of a giant as one might think.  So, my head injury.  God is taking me places I never thought possible.  He’s doing things I never thought doable.  Other people are being blessed, healed, and strengthened with what God is doing in me, with me, and through me.  I’ll take it.  It’s all good.  That’s what All That the Locusts Have Eaten is all about.  I’m a living testament to what Romans 8:28 says when it defines truth plainly: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Author Interview

1. Which author has most influenced your own writing?

One of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis and I would say, he has most definitely influenced my writing! I love how speculative and outright he is with his faith. I would dare say that I enjoy Lewis’ Nonfiction and Christian Adult Fiction over his Children’s books. I never grew up reading The Chronicles of Narnia series, finishing those books in my later years.

My PG-13 Christian Dark Fiction novel, After You: A Demon is Always Lurking Nearby is a modern-day twist on Lewis’ classic The Screwtape Letters.

C.S. Lewis likes to create Jesus Christ and God as fantastical characters in his stories. In his book, The Great Divorce, the story is set in Heaven and is a perfect introspection on the majesty of Paradise and the heart of Christ.

I like to also set my books in Heaven and I also write speculative fiction pieces such as:  This is My Heaven, The Creation Project and The Roland Sisters and the Spirit Program.  I also make Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Spirit into main characters, primarily in my Christian Fiction pieces.

2. Describe your books in five words.

I’ve written 10 Books:

Christian Nonfiction:

God the Father, Jesus the Big Brother, Holy Spirit the Best Friend: Closeness with the Holy Trinity

Christian Children’s Books:

Last Night, When I Prayed: Prayer Works and Demons Flee

Helpers: A Rescue Mission: Angels in School help Students

Christian Fiction:

This is My Heaven: God is with you. Always.

After You: A Demon is Always Lurking Nearby: Jesus wins over your demons

The Creation Project: Creation Story from God’s perspective

The Ring Does Not Fit:  Return back to First Love

The Roland Sisters and The Spirit Program: Divine Healing from Mental Health

Inspirational Adult Fiction:

The Characters Within: Theme Park craziness inspires Author

Andrew’s First Act: Andrew’s attempt at Stand-up Comedy

3. What is your favorite book?

My all-time favorite book is Wild at Heart by John Eldredge. I absolutely love this author; I own nearly all of his books!

Wild at Heart really speaks to me because Eldredge inspires the reader to live life from a place of passion and pursuit. He tells stories of daring feats and exotic places. Eldredge shares the Gospel message in a new light as our faith is:  A Battle to fight, an Adventure to live and a Beauty to rescue.

4. Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I prefer traditional books. I usually read about 2-3 books at a time. I love to fold the corner of the pages and highlight and underline the text. I have about 3 bookshelves full of books and I need to make room for more! I can spend hours at a bookstore!

I usually read Christian Nonfiction books and my favorite authors are: John Eldredge, C.S. Lewis, Joyce Meyer, Max Lucado and T.D. Jakes.

You can follow me on Goodreads ( https://bit.ly/3pf7liq ) as I am constantly writing book reviews and updating my reading lists.

5. If you could live inside a book, which one would it be?

Growing up, my favorite book series was Animorphs by K.A. Applegate. I absolutely loved reading about the alien invasion by the Yeerks and this ragtag team sent to stop them by using their supernatural morphing abilities.

Did you know that Nickelodeon had a TV show “Animorphs”? I was all excited to watch that!

I would LOVE to be an Animorph, fighting alongside Jake and Rachel. I would stay in Cassie’s farm and laugh at the mall with Marco. My animal of choice (as each character does prefer one) would be a parrot because I could fly and grab things with my talons.

I could help save the world with this unique group of heroes.

6. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Turn off your inner critic. Don’t let the process scare you. Take it one page at a time. Write what you are passionate about. And stay calm.

My first book took 4 years before it became an International Best Seller on Amazon. Being a successful Author will take time but the journey is worth it. Be your own cheerleader. Celebrate the milestones in your Author career. And learn to love what you do; the passion will fly off the pages! And whatever you do…KEEP WRITING!!

Donkey Devos Review and GIVEAWAY!

n-z5LdZQ

About the Book

ponaW_lA

Book: Donkey Devos: Listen When God Speaks

Author: Susan K. Stewart

Genre: Devotional

Release date: July 15, 2021

Did you know the Bible mentions only two talking animals? Each of these creatures had a different message. The first to speak out was the serpent. This character certainly wasn’t a model. If God was using this snake for a test drive, I can see why he kept the mouths of the other animals closed. This snake in the grass spoke words meant for evil. Later God allowed another animal to speak—the lowly donkey. The beast of burden. This time the animal had words of wisdom.

Susan K. Stewart expected dogs, cats, and the occasional goldfish would be all the pets she’d need—until the day Susan met donkeys at a rescue center. A few years after that fateful visit, three donkeys became part of the Stewart family. Susan soon learned these humble creatures are still messengers of wisdom.

Donkey Devos is a collection of forty pearls Susan has learned from spending time learning about her equine friends and chatting with them. She uses her experiences, donkey facts, and Biblical donkey details to share the truths God has taught. The whole family will delight in the donkey tales with a message from God.

About the Author

Susan K. Stewart didn’t expect to become a “donkey whisperer,” as some of her neighbors say. One day God put her in a herd of donkeys, and it was love at first bray. Susan and her husband Bob live in Central Texas with their three dogs, three cats, numerous chickens, and inspiring donkeys. They have three children and six outstanding grandchildren. Susan’s passion is to inspire readers with practical, real-world solutions and a few donkey stories.

More from Susan

I like to say, “I can’t not write.” I’m not even sure what event or who encouraged me to follow this pursuit. I do know my dream was to be a news reporter by day and a ballet dancer at night. God has given me the gift of teaching. I teach through written words.

Lois Lane was my inspiration. Seriously, in my teens I envisioned myself as a news reporter chasing after breaking stories around the world. I met my Superman, and Lois retired. But I began my own writing career with the help of friends and mentors.

Cecil Murphey has been a valued mentor and friend for nearly twenty years. His no-nonsense approach to helping this wanna-be writer pushed me forward to being able to call myself an author. And, Kathy Ide showed me I could be an editor. Her example and friendship have improved my writing as well

I grew up in a traveling family. (I went to fourteen different schools before graduating high school.) Of all the places my family lived, a rural ranch was not one of them. Pet donkeys and surly chickens were not part of my life experience or my bucket list.

Then it happened. I met a donkey nose-to-muzzle and a special bond was created. After my first visit to the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, I wanted donkey pets. Alas, our property was too small to meet the adoption requirements. When we made the move from California to Texas, donkeys soon became a part of the small ranch.

Caring for the donkeys turned into a friendship. Like all friends, my donkeys and I have had wonderful experiences. These goings-on became the basis for the stories in Donkey Devos: Listen When God Speaks.

I’ve written four books including the award-winning Formatting e-Books for Writers. When I’m not walking and conversing with my donkeys, I tend a vegetable garden, track family history, and read everything from the great American novel to the back of cereal boxes.

WHY I WROTE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT

During my many years in the ministry I’ve tried to feed my leadership gift with books on leadership but I never bonded with them. They were so dry. Then never talked about being rich in God, how to get supernatural faith, have a dynamic prayer life or live in the power of the Spirit. I finally decided I just must not be a leader but only a “teacher.” During those years I “led” thousands to Christ and led thousands more into forgiveness and lessons in Christ-like maturity. Two years ago I began to pray earnestly that God would restore spiritual POWER to the American Church. Then to my surprise, God strongly impressed me to write a book on SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP and gave me the title and subtitle. The book gushed out of me in eight days of writing and I’ve spent the last year and a half perfecting the copy and getting the sixty plus drawings finished. This book has the leadership lessons the Holy Spirit personally taught me. They are not DRY. You’ll find God’s presence in this book. It will teach you how to be a great follower of the real LEADER of the church, the Holy Spirit.

ONE MORE THING: These lessons are for every Christian. We don’t need titles and positions to be spiritual leaders. Just desire to “lead many to righteousness” by being a great follower of the Holy Spirit. God will use YOU to bring “massive glory” to His name.

Author Interview

When and how did I decide to become a writer?

I started writing serial stories when I was in grade school and students would sometimes stay inside during recess to hear my next episode.  But when I was twenty-three I said to God, “I love you so much I wish I could put myself in that copy machine and make thousands of me to serve you all over the world.”  God spoke instantly and firmly, “DO IT!”  Every tract, booklet, audio CD, DVD, and book is a “copy of me.” I’ve been writing these things for forty-seven years.  Many such “copies of me” (hundreds of thousands) have gone out all over the world.

Which Author has most influenced my own writing?

The Apostle Paul.

What is my own interesting writing quirk?

I think in pictures.  I love to think of ways to illustrate a truth with a drawing and I have a great artist to work with.  I want people to REMEMBER what I write and our brains remember pictures way better than mere words.  God has used me to “say it in pictures” so that people not only hear their answers—but SEE them.

DESCRIBE MY BOOK IN FIVE WORDS

YOU CAN BE A SPIRITUAL LEADER!  (six words)

YOU CAN LEAD MANY TO RIGHTEOUSNESS!  (Six words)

YOU CAN TRAIN SPIRITUAL LEADERS! (Five words)

Who is my biggest inspiration?

My greatest spiritual inspirations have always been hearing directly from God.  Of all of those experiences, perhaps the most important one of all was when the Holy Spirit showed me the heart motive of Jesus and then compared my motives to His until my heart was taken over by the motivations of the heart of Jesus.  This burning motivation to bring glory to God has been the usher of God, leading me into all the other truths and experiences.  A favorite Bible verse from which I received this revelation is John 17:1-5.

What are my hobbies?

I love every aspect of the ministry and I’ve preached in all 50 states and several foreign countries.  So “work” never feels like work to me. Sending boxes of books to prisons is especially fun!

We live in Oregon and enjoy walking on the beach or costal trails. We enjoy picking blueberries, blackberries, cherries, strawberries, peaches, pears, apples, etc.  I love family times with m wife, daughters, and grandchildren.  Board games with grandchildren—that’s lots of fun.  We also like to fish.

What kind of book do I prefer?

I like audio books and traditional books.  I don’t like to read books from a phone or computer screen.  I love to “mark up” books so that I can find what I want to use in sermons, or what I want to remember to apply.

My advice to those writing spiritual books—Hear from God.  Ask what He wants to say.  Ask how He wants it said.  Dependency is the key word in being a great achiever—depending upon God is the first step in the cycle of success.

The Other 3:16s Review and GIVEAWAY!

About the Book

Book: The Other 3:16s

Author: Malinda Fugate

Genre: Christian Living

Release Date: May 12, 2020

”For God so loved the world . . . “

Many of us could finish that sentence in our sleep. John 3:16 is a beautiful Scripture that neatly and simply sums up the message of the Gospel. But what do all the other 3:16s in the Bible have to tell us?

The words of the Bible weave a tapestry of love, particularly the love that our Heavenly Father has for His children. But a love so deep and so wide cannot be contained in one memorized phrase. It takes multiple authors of sixty-six individual books to begin to explore the mystery of God’s care for us.

The Other Three Sixteens by Malinda Fugate examines each third chapter and sixteenth verse in the Bible and invites a fresh, new perspective to help readers uncover surprises or remind them of forgotten truths of a faith that has become routine.

Through Genesis to Revelation, we can soak in its depth, wonder at its intricacies, and be moved at how much the Lord truly does lavish upon us. Together, we discover God’s love under the weight of Eve’s sin in the garden. It’s there in front of Moses, burning in a bush that is somehow not consumed. God’s love sits in the dark with Job, rebuilds a wall with Nehemiah, and encourages a young pastor named Timothy. Together we will find a deeper understanding of the way our Heavenly Father cares for each of us today.

About the Author

Malinda Fugate grew up in children’s ministry. Now, after two decades of dedicated volunteer service, she now serves full-time as the Children’s Education Director at a church in Southern California. Malinda studied communications and theatre at Azusa Pacific University, then worked behind the scenes at the Los Angeles Salem radio stations, including The Fish and KKLA. Her writing includes The Other Three Sixteens, Bible Time for Active Kids, commercial copywriting, various faith-based stage and screen plays, as well as co-producing A Single Girl’s Guide To, a lifestyle blog and web series. Her lifelong study of God’s Word continues to reveal more about the Lord every day. She lives by the beach with her pup, Yoshi.

More from Malinda

It’s the first verse many of us memorized in Sunday School and perhaps the most familiar to any Christian: “For God so loved the world….”

In one sentence, we celebrate the incredible love of God and the amazing gift of salvation that Jesus gave through the cross. John 3:16 is a beautiful Scripture to keep in our hearts and minds.

Of course, John did not assign chapters and verses when he penned his gospel. Those were added later to help us reference as we study. Yet, years of reciting John 3:16 have etched these lines into our brains, making it an easy combo to remember. What if we looked at the other 3:16 verses in each book of the Bible? What treasures would we unearth hidden in our well-worn pages?

We find Adam and Eve in their last days in a garden paradise, dealing with the consequences of a terrible decision.

There is a young boy training to be a priest who suddenly hears the audible voice of God.

A king’s cup-bearer journeys to his homeland to lead a massive construction project despite adversity.

We sit next to Job in his darkest days, crying out to God for answers.

We meet a young pastor named Timothy, experience miraculous healings, and witness the baptism of Jesus Himself.

Most of all, in every verse, we discover the immense love of God. We learn that it cannot be contained simply in one phrase; such a great love is too full of rich detail. Most of all, we find that His love is alive and active in our very own lives, right this minute.

My Review

A unique approach to studying the Bible, Malinda Fugate’s The Other 3:16s considers the universally-known John 3:16 and the Bible’s resounding message of love and explores the third chapter and sixteenth verse of the other books of the Bible that have them. She bases her analysis on the fact that God is love and that He has an overwhelming love for all of His children. Proceeding in order, she begins with Genesis and moves through both the Old and New Testaments, ending with Revelation and John. Not only is this logical and easy to follow, but I love that she includes the Old as well as the New Testament. The former tends to be written about less often, and it is challenging reading. I am impressed with the effort that the author has put into the organization and presentation of this book.

The Other 3:16s offers the big picture of the Bible in the form of a continuing narrative related by the author. As such, it can be read as one would a regular book, or it can be used as a devotional. This latter option is bolstered by the discussion questions that the author has graciously provided at the end of the book; they are merged with a Bible reading plan and formatted into either 6-or 10-week time spans, although this could be adjusted to the reader’s preference. Along these same lines, Fugate has arranged each chapter to discuss a book of the Bible. The verse corresponding with chapter 3 verse 16 is written out, and then she explains the setting and historical background, which is so important of any writing, but especially to a text as sacred as the Bible. In order to gain an understanding of the Lord and His workings from the earliest times through the book of Revelation, it’s necessary to have at least a basic knowledge of the individual Bible books and also be able to put them together as one cohesive narrative. Also, Fugate ties in the most-often-quoted verses from the Bible book from which they come, which is also helpful in bringing everything together. With an e-book copy, when I pulled up my notes section to read the passages that I highlighted, I was surprised and delighted to find that each one had the Bible book noted above it.

Speaking of the content itself, aside from a few isolated instances, this nonfiction book follows Scripture and provides information and clarification about the historical and cultural milieu, which helps readers to more fully understand what is transpiring and how it is significant. This, in turn, draws readers closer to the God who “welcomes questions from His children when they come from humble, reverent hearts.” I appreciate that Fugate acknowledges the tough questions that we all ask at some point, the answers to which we will probably never fully know on this side of eternity, concluding that we simply need to trust God because He always has everything under His perfect control, and His plans for His children are always for our good and for His glory. And so, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Celebrate Lit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

Seven Sevens in the Gospel of John Review and GIVEAWAY!

About the Book

Book: Seven Sevens in the Gospel of John

Author: Sinikka Smothers

Genre: Nonfiction

Release Date: January 22, 2020

The number seven is significant in science and history as well as in the Bible. When a science educator applies the lens of seven onto the gospel of John, intriguing patterns emerge. Author Sinikka Smothers says, “God has a purposeful design for every area of His creation—including the use of numbers. God loves numbers, especially the number seven. He used mathematical algorithms to construct the matrix we call our universe. Mathematics is God’s language of creation.”

Discover refreshing insights into the life of Christ through this study of seven themes embedded in John’s gospel narrative. The author presents John’s message in seven parts, each one divided into seven sections. Revisit the familiar seven “I AM” statements of Jesus and other sevens that are not widely written about:

  • Seven signs and miracles Jesus performed
  • Seven witnesses that testify of Jesus
  • Seven ministries of the Holy Spirit
  • Seven life-changing conversations of Jesus
  • Seven women
  • Seven questions Pilate asked Jesus

This unique commentary includes rich historical details and paints a vivid portrait of Jesus the Son of God as Master, Savior, and Friend. Relevant stories and personal applications bring the familiar accounts of the book of John to contemporary contexts.

About the Author

Sinikka Smothers emigrated from Finland to Alabama to study after receiving a college scholarship. While her original plan was to become a missionary, meeting her future husband, Jim, in college changed the direction of her life. She worked twenty-five years as a science teacher with individuals who are visually impaired, and earned her doctorate in education from the University of Alabama. Recently retired, she enjoys teaching Bible classes and spending time with her husband of forty years, two children, and three grandchildren.

More from Sinikka Smothers

A mob of men, women, and children were climbing up the hillside by the Sea of Galilee. “There he is!” someone shouted from above. Those withing hearing distance turned quickly and began to hasten in the direction of the voice. The rest of the large crowd followed their lead, trapped in a current of motion. It was difficult for them to see ahead since the number of people had grown to more than five thousand. Mothers and fathers picked up their young children to protect them from the travelers pressing against them while trying to move ahead to the front of the throng…

Seven Sevens in the Gospel of John began with hand written notes overflowing the pages of my devotional journal. The journal led to several hundred typewritten pages of commentary on John’s narrative of the life of Jesus. After teaching two bible studies based on my emerging outline of seven sevens, I ran into Athena Holtz with Redemption Press. Athena connected me with an editor who condensed my tub-full of writing to a sleek 195 pages. The ten-year-long writing project reached its finish line in January 2020 when I received my “author’s copy”. I will always remember the joy I felt at the first sight of the shiny book cover featuring a summer sky above the gold colored pages of an old parchment. Indeed, if John’s gospel is the treasure map, the timeless treasure it points to is Jesus, our Savior and Lord.

Seven Sevens in the Gospel of John does not add anything to John’s masterful presentation of Jesus as the Son of God and the Son of Man who invites everyone to live in a personal relationship with Him. It merely offers refreshing perspectives and a novel framework for the reading and rereading of this well-loved gospel. Each of the seven themes in my book contains seven subtopics, totaling 49 chapters. The chapters include special anecdotes, personal stories, and information pieces that connect the themes to contemporary contexts. It is my hope that the reader will find the book useful as a Bible study companion, book study, teaching outline or a devotional reading.

After my book project was completed, something new and surprising began to rise up in my spirit: I became inspired to experiment in visual arts. I wanted my Facebook posts for my book to stand out and speak to diverse audiences; as a result, I constructed collages, used mystery photos from the Holy Land, searched through our family’s Google photos, and began to paint images on old wooden boards I found in our shed. This explosion of artistic expression has led me to rent a booth at a local antiques and crafts mall. If you visit Huntsville, Alabama, please stop by at the Top Key Market to see my booth, at the center of which stands a worn pulpit featuring Seven Sevens in the Gospel of John.

I inherited my love for words from my mother who always spoke the right words for every situation. She often quoted wonderfully quaint Finnish folk sayings that carried centuries of wisdom. I became an avid reader and writer at the age of 6. Academic studies occupied most of my professional life as a teacher, but after retiring four years ago, I have plunged into reading and writing to make up for the lost time. My husband and I have been married for 41 years. Our two children and four grandchildren live nearby and add a lot of fun to our weekly calendar. I look forward to writing a biographical book in the near future. The theme, of course, will include the number seven.

My Review

Numbers have great significance in the Bible, from the days of creation in Genesis to the churches addressed in Revelation. Even being someone who cringes away from math, which is definitely not one of my talents, I find God’s use of numbers fascinating. The intricacy with which God has crafted every slight detail of the world is truly awe-inspiring and something that only He could have accomplished. Lest we become lackluster, however, it is important to continually study and acknowledge the creativity and genius of the Lord.

With the Bible itself being the best resource and the one that should be consulted and used over and above any other, there are also other good supplementary books that draw attention to specific topics or areas of Scripture. Seven Sevens in the Gospel of John by Sinikka Smothers is a relatively short but detailed and well-thought-out book about how the number seven continually appears in John’s Gospel account and how it relates to us today. I don’t think that there is necessarily a wrong layout for putting forth this information, and the author does well in arranging seven main parts into seven smaller sections. Although I am familiar with what is discussed, I appreciate the change of perspective that comes from considering the groupings of events. The seven main sections include the signs and miracles that Jesus performed, the seven women who met Jesus, Pilate’s seven questions for Jesus, seven life-changing conversations, God’s plan of the ages, and the seven ministries of the Holy Spirit.

Interspersing contemporary stories and anecdotes within the chapters, Smothers reinforces the personal connection that we each need to have with our Savior. I appreciate how she ends each chapter with the Resurrection, either chronologically or by suggestion, because it further impresses upon readers the fulfillment of Scripture and the promise of eternity for the faithful. One of the things that I learned while reading this book is that the Pharisees particularly sought to kill Jesus after He resurrected Lazarus because according to Jewish beliefs, once someone died, their spirit could remain nearby for a brief period of time, but being dead for four days, Lazarus’ spirit would no longer be present and he would have begun decomposing. I also came to further realize the significance of the Resurrection in tandem with the Day of Atonement and the role of the high priest. The Jewish high priest would annually enter the Holy of Holies to sprinkle the blood of a sacrificial animal on the mercy seat. In a beautiful and prophetic manner, Jesus became our High Priest by entering the Holy of Holies, sacrificing Himself, sprinkling His own blood on the stone where His body had lain, and rising from the dead. The two angels who appeared to Mary Magdalene in Jesus’ tomb represent the two cherubim guarding the ark of the covenant. Somehow I had not fully made this connection before, and it took my breath away when I read it. I love closing a book with a renewed sense of faith and joy in the Lord and more knowledge of Him.

I recommend this book for both new and mature Christians as well as skeptics because it provides an excellent overview of the New Testament, particularly the gospel of John, and it focuses on the events of Jesus’ life that are related in Scripture.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Celebrate Lit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

Study 12: Immeasurable: Hyperballō; ὑπερβάλλω)

And what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might. (Ephesians 1:19)

Over the years, I’ve been privileged to travel to many lands and countries to preach the gospel. One of the best parts about this is experiencing the different cultures, particularly their food and cuisines. Meals are times of joy and jubilee, when the hosts go all out to make me feel at home.

This is especially true in Sicily. I’ve often joked with my Sicilian friends that eating is a full-time job there. Sicilians take pride in making sure you are well fed, and you’ll often hear them say, “Mangia” (eat) or “Mangia qualcosa” (eat something), even right after you’ve just eaten. Food is of the utmost importance there and the answer to many of life’s problems. I understand this because my grandparents were of Sicilian descent.

There’s a joke in Sicily about a young man with a guilty conscience who tells his mother, “Mama, I’ve robbed a bank.” She says, “Well, that’s not good.” Then, he says, “And I’ve stolen a car.” His mama says, “I see. That’s not good either.” Then he says, “And I haven’t eaten today.” And she jumps up from her seat and screams, “What! You haven’t eaten? What’s wrong with you!?”

I once invented a joke of my own that the Sicilians found funny. I said, “After studying God’s Word, I’ve discovered the disciples of Jesus were Sicilian.” They looked perplexed. While they were still scratching their heads, I had them turn to John 4:31, which says, “Meanwhile the disciples were urging him [Jesus], saying, ‘Rabbi, eat.’” I think that joke has been making its way around Italy ever since.

Needless to say, there’s never been a time when I’ve been disappointed with mealtimes. I’ve been to Sicily twelve times and I can’t think of one instance when I didn’t have more than enough food placed before my eyes. I will never forget the first meal I had in Sicily. It was on a Sunday afternoon after church. I was told we were going to have “a little something” before dinner that evening. They brought out course after course after course. I was stuffed to the gills before the main course even arrived¾and this wasn’t even dinner.

My translator told me later, “Chris, the Sicilians go all out for every meal. You are never going to survive if you try eating everything.” If I’ve learned anything about the wonderful Sicilian people over the years, it’s that they don’t mess around when it comes to food: it’s always going to be over and above, more than enough, and plenty left afterwards.

The apostle Paul talks about God’s power this way in Ephesians 1:19. Here, Paul was sharing with his church in Ephesus what he prays for them. He tells them that he prays they will know the hope that God has called them to and the riches of God’s “glorious inheritance in the saints” (verse 18).

The hope that God called us to represents the beginning of the Christian life. While we did call upon God to be saved (see Romans 10:13), He first called us. He called us to belong to Christ and have a new life free from sin, to be holy and separate from the world, and be part of God’s celestial family.

The riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints alludes to the end of the Christian life. It is our total inheritance, which we will receive when the fullness of time comes. Until then, we are waiting for it with patience. In short, verse 18 speaks about the beginning and end of the Christian life.

At present, we find ourselves in the middle. Our Christian life has taken off, but we have yet to receive the totality of God’s promises. As we make our way toward receiving this final inheritance, we find our path strewn with all sorts of challenges, difficulties, and suffering. To push us past these and over the goal line, God has given us His power—“what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe.”

The Greek word for “immeasurable” is hyperballō. It is a two-part Greek word that comes from: hyper (above, over, beyond, more than) and ballō (to throw or cast). It literally meant to “throw beyond” or “surpass.” Over time, it came to express other means of excessiveness such as outbidding someone at an auction, extreme heat from a fire, unbearable pain, and the intense brightness of stars. Hence, it was a word used for something that stood out, excelled the norms, and went beyond the standard amount.

The idea in this Scripture is that God supplies an over-and-above ration of His power to help us overcome the obstacles and challenges we face so we can receive the full inheritance promised to us. Not just a little, just enough, or even more than enough, but an over-and-above, highly excessive amount, like a meal in Sicily. We can stuff ourselves with God’s power and never come close to exhausting it. It’s all around us and is ours for the taking. And we aren’t to be stingy with it because there is enough to go around and plenty to take home.

Perhaps you are wondering how you can tap into this smorgasbord of power. The way Paul tapped into it: through prayer. When you come into prayer, you stand before a banquet table that is heaped with everything you could possibly need to overcome your troubles. And you are free to take.

My Review

As a lover of words and languages, reading has always been my favorite pastime, and I am one of those people who reads the dictionary for fun, always looking to add to my vocabulary. I took Latin in college and fell in love with it, especially due to the fact that it forms the foundation for so many of our English words. As soon as I saw the title of Chris Palmer’s Greek Word Study, signing up to review it was a no-brainer; last year I read and thoroughly enjoyed his book Letters From Jesus, so I enthusiastically dove into this new offering.

Because I wanted to study and savor each of the 90 terms that Palmer discusses, it took me much longer than usual to read this book, and it is one that I can unequivocally say I will be rereading. I very much appreciate Palmer’s deep yet easy-to-understand teaching about each word, presenting both the word and the Scripture first in English, then in Koine Greek (the original language of the New Testament), followed by a relevant contemporary story or application and an explanation of what the Scripture and the particular Greek word mean in Biblical context. With an emphasis on inflection, he makes connections between familiar verses and the culture of the time, demonstrating how the original early church audience would have understood the words and stories.

Some of the words that Palmer writes about in Greek Word Study that fascinate me the most involve how we need to conduct ourselves as Christians and our relationship with the Lord. He instructs that panoplian, for instance, refers to the whole armor of God, and while discussing execheo (sound forth), he exhorts that “If you aren’t already, believe God to make you a Krakatoa for the kingdom.” Considering that the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883 exhibited the loudest sound known to history, this is an incredible hint at what God can do through us. Likewise, with poiema (workmanship), he references Ephesians 2:10 and Romans 1:20, pointing out that “By using poiema in his letter to the Ephesians, Paul makes a connection between those who are in Christ and the creation account in Genesis.” One more example is particularly timely; nepho means sober-minded, and Palmer teaches that we need to take God’s Word into account in all that we see, hear, and do. “So, mix your media intake with the Word.” I think that this is always sage advice, and never more so than in this present time!

One relatively minor quibble I have is that Palmer writes that “Humans have inhabited Crete for at least 130,000 years”, which goes against the basic tenet of young earth creationism. That issue aside, however, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in studying Scripture more deeply and gaining a greater understanding of early church culture. Those who enjoy languages will find Greek Word Study of particular interest, but no knowledge of foreign languages, Greek or otherwise, is necessary. At the end of the book, there is both a Greek-English and an English-Greek index of all of the terms studied for additional reference. I hope that our words echo those of Solon the Athenian: “I grow old always learning many things.”

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Celebrate Lit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.

My rating: 5 stars ♥♥♥♥♥
